Dental caries is contagious?
Dental caries, commonly known as tooth decay or cavities, is the single most common chronic childhood disease. In fact, it is an infectious disease. Mothers with cavities can transmit caries-producing bacteria to their babies when they clean pacifiers by sticking them in their own mouths or by sharing silverware. Spouses can transmit caries-producing bacteria to each other and their older children by kissing, sharing utensils or sharing toothbrushes. Some individuals tend to have more cavity causing bacteria than others, especially if they have active caries/decay. For this reason, it is so important to see your dentist on a regular basis to have any dental caries or other issues resolved for your oral health and the oral health of your family.
